Business Studies @ Actions Stations & Spinnaker Tower

19 Sep 2011 - 18 Jun 2012
Action Stations and the Spinnaker Tower are two of the newest attractions in Portsmouth and were both part of the Renaissance of Portsmouth Harbour Millennium Development Scheme, which was funded by a £38 million lottery grant from the
Millennium Commission. Action Stations, situated in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard was opened to the public in 2001 and offers an exciting series of large simulators and interactive hands on exhibits based around the modern Royal Navy. Whilst Spinnaker Tower situated nearby in the very popular Gunwharf Quays development opened four years later in 2005 and offers amazing panoramic views from three viewing platforms at 100, 105 and 110 metres respectively. Both attractions are now pleased to offer an interesting and informative Business Studies presentation focusing on the challenges of customer service and operations within a modern visitor attraction.

Students begin their day with a 20-minute tour of Action Stations during which they will view the wide range of simulators and exhibits available. They will then be taken into the Action Stations Conference Room and given a 45-minute presentation using Action Stations as a case study covering all aspects of the operation, marketing and customer service that will be relevant to a business studies related course. On completion of the presentation, students will be set a customer services related task combined with the opportunity to experience the Action Stations simulators and climbing exhibits. Students break for lunch before the Spinnaker Tower host their presentation on the operational activities and customer service; including job roles, personality types, company structure, customer types, the visitor experience and getting it right! Students then have the opportunity to experience a visit to the Spinnaker Tower for themselves. At the end of the visit each student receives a detailed resource booklet that covers both Action Stations and Spinnaker Tower to help with further study of the topic. With notice and discussion it is possible to include other subject areas.
