DIG An Archaeological Adventure

DIG An Archaeological Adventure

Owned by the same archaeologists who discovered the Viking-age city and created JORVIK Viking Centre, DIG offers you a unique archaeological adventure to get you on your way to becoming a real archaeologist.

What We Offer Visiting Schools

At DIG An Archaeological Adventure, you get to discover only the most exciting archaeological artefacts from the 2000 years of history hidden under the streets of York.

Our four replica excavation pits are filled with Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian finds, so you can grab a trowel and dig up the clues that show how people lived in these times.

Sessions start in the briefing hut, where pupils are instructed on digging for archaeological finds and kitted out with the tools they will need.

Once inside the DIG pits, pupils will find out which materials survive and how archaeologists’ sort and identify finds to learn about different periods.

Your class can put their enquiry skills to the test, using scientific thinking to analyse the materials left behind.

Choose to explore the remains of Viking backyards or Roman rubbish pits to complement your topic of study.

If you would like to find out more about visiting DIG safely, please contact our Reservations department directly on by phone (01904 615505) or email (groups@yorkat.co.uk).

Virtual Outreach

Why not invite a Viking, medieval medic, or friendly archaeologist into your classroom this year?

With our new live, immersive and interactive sessions, you won’t miss out on any of the fun of visiting our attractions, as we have adapted our award-winning school workshops for exclusive access online.

Students can meet a historical character who will tell stories, show you prized possessions and maybe even guide you through doing some Viking activities yourselves!

Or experience a Viking encounter like no other with a bespoke Q&A session – pupils can enhance their history studies or develop ideas for literacy work by interviewing one of our Vikings!

The virtual outreach encounters are available via Skype, Zoom and Google Meet, and we can even include children studying from home, meaning everyone in your class can stay connected as we explore the past together.
