National Museums Liverpool

National Museums Liverpool

National Museums Liverpool offers a great selection of curriculum-linked workshops for schools and groups across five of its seven museums and galleries. The sessions, on topics ranging from Ancient Egypt to Transatlantic Slavery, are led by experienced and knowledgeable staff, who use fascinating collections, inspiring exhibitions and amazing stories to engage your students.

World Museum, which opened in 1853, is home to millions of incredible objects and boasts a planetarium and aquarium. As well as workshops on outer space and sea life, there’s also sessions on Ancient Egypt, and Ancient Greece and Rome.

Museum of Liverpool, located on the city’s iconic waterfront next to the River Mersey, explores Liverpool’s fascinating and diverse history. Here you’ll find sessions on Anglo-Saxons and Vikings, the Victorians, Liverpool’s architecture, trade and industry, and local transport.

The city’s Maritime Museum, which sits at the heart of the historic Royal Albert Dock, is an amazing place to learn about RMS Titanic, its connections to Liverpool, and the stories of its passengers. Workshops can be booked in conjunction with a self-led visit to the museum’s ‘Titanic and Liverpool: the untold story’ exhibition.

The International Slavery Museum, where you can hear the untold stories of enslaved people and learn about historical and contemporary slavery, offers tours for schools and groups alongside workshops exploring the impacts and legacies of transatlantic slavery.

Finally, the Walker Art Gallery – home to beautiful paintings, sculpture and decorative art from the 13th century to the present day – offers creative, hands-on gallery tours as well as detailed sessions on subjects like portraiture and Greek mythology.

All of National Museums Liverpool’s sessions are linked to the curriculum and have clear learning outcomes. These are clearly presented on the website for you to review prior to booking and align to your lesson plans. Some workshops are accompanied by resources and activities which you can complete before and after your visit. They will help to prepare your students for what they will experience at the museum or gallery, and post-workshop, will help to consolidate what they have learned during the session.

Selected sessions have been built with SEND students in mind, but any workshop can be adapted for your students’ needs – you can discuss your requirements with the team in advance. All of National Museums Liverpool’s venues are accessible and the website is full of helpful information which you can look at before you visit.

For most workshops, prices range from £49 to £99 per class, and they can cater for up to 30 or 32 students. Booking couldn’t be easier, with the option to choose your slot on the website and pay online.

If your school is finding the price of school trips and associated travel prohibitive, please check National Museums Liverpool’s website to see if there are any bursaries available to you.
