NEW RECEPTION/KS1 ACTIVITY - LIFE IN THE INFANT CLASSROOM

What was school life like for a five or six year old in the past? Our new activity gives children the opportunity to find out. The 50-minute session takes place in the school, starting at playtime and moving into the Kindergarten for a lesson. Children learn traditional playground games such hopscotch and dusty bluebells.

When the bell rings they line up to sit at their desks for a lesson. After trying out letters in the sand trays, counting with peg boards and chalk drawings inspired by the nature table, children will leave being able to draw similarities and differences between their school and those 100 years ago.

This activity costs £45 per session for a whole class, plus admission charges. To book or for further information, contact the Bookings Officer on 0191 370 4026 or e-mail bookings@beamish.org.uk.

WIND IN YOUR SAILS – FREE OUTREACH SESSION AND TRANSPORT SUBSIDY

Wind In Your Sails is our annual engineering competition for pupils in Years 5 and 6. Pupils are challenged to design, build and test a windmill model, before visiting the museum to compete against other schools.

Inspired by the Georgian windmill that will be constructed as part of our Remaking Beamish project, pupils will need to carry out research into windmill design, and test their construction to make sure it is fully functional.

Participating schools will receive a FREE outreach session to introduce the competition, loan of the construction kit, a £100 subsidy to assist with coach hire and a visit to Beamish for the competition final – plus prizes.   Families of all your pupils will be offered discounted admission to the museum at our Wind in Your Sails weekend (1st and 2nd July).

We still have two spaces in the competition for schools this year. Please get in touch with Helen Talbot, STEM Learning Coordinator, email helentalbot@beamish.org.uk if you are interested.

Schools must contribute £6 admission charge per pupil. The competition final will take place on Friday, 30th June.
