The year is 1836. The Bank’s Directors have received a mysterious map with details of London’s sewer system, claiming that one of the drains leads straight into our gold vaults! But which drain was it, and who made this bizarre claim? Find out by spotting clues as you go round the Museum to claim your reward at the end!

Whilst in the Museum, you can learn a little more about gold and why it has been treasured for thousands of years. You can even hold our genuine gold bar, which might take you by surprise – it weighs in at an impressive 13 kilos! Our Gold corridor features several gold bars, including two rare Roman bars and a unique, completely unmarked gold bar used during the coronation ceremony of Queen Elizabeth II. The display also examines the scientific properties that make this precious metal so useful in modern technology, and features a full height graphic of the Bank’s vaults, creating an experience of walking through a gold vault. This is the perfect backdrop for a #GoldVaultSelfie, which can be shared on the Museum’s Twitter and Instagram channels @boemuseum.

While you’re at the Museum, there are plenty of attractions to make sure you have a fun family day out, including a banknote jigsaw, a roller ball game and the opportunity to take part in some safe cracking. Activity sheets are also available for children of all ages, with a small prize for everyone who takes part.

All activities are free and there is no need to book in advance
