School visits to Martin Mere

Written by: Elmtree Press

At Martin Mere, we welcome school groups of all ages. We offer a wide variety of guided learning sessions which take place mostly outdoors, although we are well-equipped with classroom space in case of bad weather. Our site boasts a large collection of exotic and rare waterfowl from around the world, accessible via tarmac paths. Many of our birds will feed from the hand.

Our sessions incorporate active, enquiry-based learning. We cover topics such as pond and land invertebrates, birds, plants, needs of life, adaptations, food chains, mammals, water cycle, human influences on ecosystems, wetlands art and history.

In particular, come for a visit at our most exciting time for wild birds – in the winter! Thousands of wild geese and swans come to stay on our 600-acre nature reserve and we have a special guided learning session to bring children close to them and to learn about their incredible migration.
