International Day of Forests – 21 March 2020

International Day of Forests – 21 March 2020

Every year, forest areas area roughly the size of England are lost and sadly, along with the loss of the forests, come the loss of plant and animal species in the affected areas. 30% of land on Earth is forest so they naturally play a crucial role in stemming the rate of negative climate change. They also provide food, water and medicines for 1.6 billion of the world’s poorest people.

The 21st March 2020 is the 8th anniversary of the International Day of Forests and many events are globally held to raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests and trees to current and future generations. One of the best ways for schools and communities to actively embrace International Day of Forests is by encouraging tree planting activities.

If visiting a forest is on the agenda, one of our favourite forest areas is Dalby Forest in the beautiful North York Moors National Park. Home to an outstanding forest with important wildlife species, it is also a designated Dark Sky Discovery Site.

There’s many great forests and adventure sites set within beautiful forests all across England. If you’re looking for places that offer a mixture of learning and adventure then check out In2action – Whitemead Forest Park located in the heart of the Forest of Dean and Conkers, situated in 120 acres of woodland at the heart of the National Forest.

If you and your students aren’t afraid of heights, you can get up high amongst the treetops at one of the many Go Ape or Treetop Nets locations at various locations around the country.
