Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal Water Gardens
Inspire students of all ages with a visit to this World Heritage Site.
Our great value workshops are tailored to help you teach anything from
history and science to nature and art. Let this vast outdoor classroom
bring your curriculum to life.
The stunning ruins of this great abbey provide an amazing backdrop to discovering about religious life in a monastery during medieval times. Your students can dress as monks in our ‘Day in the life’ workshop and then have a try at illuminated writing. Through drama and story-telling workshops they could bring history to life to discover what happened during the 400-year history of the abbey. They can use a variety of evidence sources to decide if Henry VIII was right to bring about the Dissolution. Many schools use the site to support their delivery of GCSE and A level History.
With a medieval mill here too, there’s the chance to focus on the science of forces and energy during our ‘Waterwheel’ workshop.
The variety of habitats across this beautiful 800-acre estate give your students the opportunities to pond dip, sweep net and sample the wildlife – these workshops are adapted to suit the age and needs of your group.
Through our art workshops, students can learn new skills of mosaic and feltmaking using inspiration from their surroundings to guide their creativity.
We have a variety of resources available on our website for self-led Abbey visits and are happy to work with you to develop a bespoke day for you and your students.
Minster School teacher – “The children were really interested in the different parts of the abbey and their uses, and the life of a monk. The play was very effective and a good way to teach the dissolution.”
Broomfield Primary School teacher – “Our students definitely enjoyed their visit! The visit will have a huge impact on their follow-on learning in the classroom. A hands-on experience. Excellent. Well organised.”
Ripon Cathedral School teacher – “The children were highly engaged and interested in the environment and the workshop leaders. The real strength of the workshop was the knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff, the children were able to ask lots of questions and be given detailed and thorough answers. It is obvious that the team care about the environment and the living creatures within it. I would highly recommend the workshop!”
Todmorden High School student – “Dressing up was fantastic. Getting into the spirit of how a monk lived – much different to our modern day.”
