Allerton Waste Recovery Park
Find out what happens to rubbish after you throw it away. Take part in waste-related activities, and go on a site tour to view state-of-the-art waste treatment technology. Visits are available for pupils from Key Stage 2, 3 and 4, with session plans covering science, geography and citizenship curriculum links.
Allerton Waste Recovery Park brings together state-of-the-art technologies to make the most of rubbish from homes in York and North Yorkshire. It has been open since March 2018 and is operated by Amey on behalf of North Yorkshire County Council and City of York Council.
This new facility is reducing the amount of household waste going to landfill in the county by 90%. Diverting this waste away from landfill means we can use it to generate enough energy to power the equivalent of 40,000 homes.
Our on-site Education and Visitor Centre offers talks, tours and activities for schools and community groups. We can all do our bit to help the environment and here at Allerton Waste Recovery Park we encourage everyone to think about reducing, reusing and recycling their waste. In addition to visiting Allerton Waste Recovery Park, we offer a three-step Community Champions programme for schools and youth clubs.
