Llancaiach Fawr Manor
Llancaiach Fawr Manor is a Living History Museum. The 17th century servants are always thrilled to show off their fine house and have a good gossip. History is brought to life, ordinary people who lived in extraordinary times explain and talk about the folklore and superstition, which ruled their lives.
When visiting the Manor house, guests may be lucky to meet the master of the house, Edward Prichard. Although, he’s a busy man, much concerned with business and the Civil War, he is often called away at short notice.
Or perhaps Mistress Mary Prichard, his wife… although she prefers to go and visit her family and friends at Briton Ferry, rather than brave the air of the valleys, as she is a rather “sickly” soul. Of course, being a devoted mother, she always takes their little daughters Jane and Mary, with her.
The servants however, are always there to greet visitors and make them feel welcome! You can be sure that there will be someone who will be pleased to show you around the master’s fine house – provided that you are of good repute of course!
Stephen Mathias Agent and Surveyor of the household, is quite often on hand to meet and greet gentlefolk: –
“My Master Edward Prichard owns the capital Manor House of Llancaiach Fawr in the parish of Gelligaer in this year of our Lord 1645. He is one of the most powerful men in Glamorgan, being a landowner, a lawyer and a Justice of the Peace, and a Commissioner of Array for his Majesty King Charles.
You shall be afforded a most gracious welcome to my Master his house. Edward Prichard is the direct descendant of Cedrych ap Gwaithfoed, the olden Lord of Ystrad Twyi. My Master still follows the ancient traditions of Perchentyaeth, the obligations brought by the office and privilege of Landowner.
The Master will offer protection and hospitality via his servants, who will attend gentle visitors and provide guidance about his fair house and speak of their experiences and their lives in the house during this most horrid Civil War. Fortunately Llancaiach is far removed from the distractions of War, and all of my Master’s visitors will be assured of a safe haven and pleasant discourse during their visit.”
