Roves Farm Visitor Centre
Roves Farm is a working farm open to the public year round. We have a large variety of friendly pet animals that can be fed and handled on every visit, and a range of commercial animals including sheep, Gloucester Old Spot pigs, Sussex cattle and Highland cattle. Our ewes lamb in Spring, cows calve in Spring & Autumn, and our sows farrow year round. Learning about these animals, their welfare and purpose, can be incorporated on guided walk or tractor ride exploring the farm.
Other features of the farm include woodlands, ponds & wetlands, River Cole, flower rich meadows, grass field margins and wild bird covers. These habitats are a haven for a diverse array of wildlife and offer many exciting learning opportunities every season relating to farming, the environment and countryside.
We are passionate about teaching and showing people of all ages where their food comes from. Producing our very own beef, pork and lamb, we have the perfect facility for showing children the whole process from the animals on the farm to the food on their fork.
Example topics that can be covered include, but are not limited to, growth & seasons, life cycles, animal welfare, working as a farmer, senses & new environments, food & farming, wildlife, minibeasts, habitats, rivers, flooding, farm diversification & renewable energy. Worksheets and information packs are used where appropriate. Risk assessments are provided on booking or available on request.
A typical visit is approximately 4 hours long. Your guide will meet and greet you, lead your group through all activities and learning. A typical visit will include a ‘hands on’ tour of the visitor centre including animal barns, paddocks & farm shop and a tractor ride around the farm stopping at a variety of locations with interactive activities, where appropriate, and talks specific to your class. Guided activities will be interspersed with short breaks for hand washing, toilet trips, snacks and lunch and play if you wish.
