Frogmore Paper Mill

In 1803 the first Fourdrinier Paper Machine, was installed and operated here, This story of the ‘flat white stuff’, is a fascinating; history of invention, communication revolution and family saga…

Paper is at once simple and fascinating. It encompasses science, history, engineering and creativity using just plant fibre and water.

“What a fabulous day for our  Year 11 Design and Technology girls @FrogmoreMill  Would recommend to all school settings and Key Stages, such a fantastic place, here in Hertfordshire!”

Industrial heritage in action. We offer a range of education experiences and can adapt them for specific group needs – just talk to us and we will see what we can do!  We can support your curriculum and engage your class in a variety of hands on workshops. We deliver to all abilities including special needs and home learning groups.  Everyone can get something from a visit to Frogmore Paper Mill.

Typically, groups arrive at 10 am for a 2.5 hour session, but we can do other variations, so please discuss your requirements with us. The individual workshops run for 30-40 minutes each, dependent on numbers, as activities are largely hands-on. We make every effort to ensure our visitors can see the 1902 Fourdrinier No4 in action.

Sessions begin with a short presentation, which sets the scene for all that the group will see and do. Larger groups will be sub-divided to undertake making paper, the mill tour and third/fourth workshop.

Your session plan will be sent to you prior to arrival, so teachers are able to consider how they wish to divide the full group up.

All sessions begin with an introductory presentation as grounding for everything else we do.  This is followed by a papermaking session, mill tour and third workshop (2.5 hour booking); plus a fourth for whole day sessions.

Additional workshops include: weaving, letterpress (Gutenberg to present day), braille (the Louis Braille story and using our Perkins braillers), the canal (how they work and a maths activity), history (working life in the mill from age 10, Victorian life), science (material under the microscope to gain understanding of plant fibre properties).

We also deliver Enterprise activities to KS4/5, based around the paper mill environment.

All our activities are fun, hands-on, fact packed experiences.  We can top your visit off with a boat race in our backstream- fun with a bit of problem solving.
