Harewood House invites you and your school to explore our new and exciting Learning programme. As an educational charity, accredited museum and licensed zoo, our sessions are inspired by our amazing collections, objects and animals while being led by experienced facilitators, specialist animal keepers and professional artists.

Harewood has been delivering unforgettable learning experiences for over forty years and is a current recipient of the prestigious Sandford Award, so you can look forward to a memorable time here.

Our brand-new learning programme focuses on science, sustainability and the environment within the amazing Harewood Bird Garden, Grounds and Gardens.

Explore Harewood’s fascinating history by visiting the House and Gardens, with sessions focussing on History, Art & Design and Geography, with an emphasis on cross-curricular learning.

Your pupils can apply their learning in engaging indoor and outdoor spaces while using materials from our archive.

Key Stage 1 & 2 – Harewood at War!

Your pupils will be offered an unforgettable learning experience by immersing themselves in the history of Harewood House and learning about the role it played during the Wars.

Join a Voluntary Aid Detachment nurse to learn about Harewood role as convalescence hospital, before joining a member of the Women’s Land Army to explore the food grown here whilst learning to cook using rationed food.

Key Stage 1 & 2 –  Princess Mary, Harewood’s Royal Resident

Pupils will be offered the opportunity to learn about Princess Mary, Harewood’s Royal Resident. The session explores how Harewood was transformed into a Royal Household after Princess Mary married the 6th Earl of Harewood and the Princess’ involvement in the First World War and Second World War. Pupils will take part in fun and practical activities using unique source material taken from our archive.

Key Stage 2 – Harewood and the Transatlantic Slave Trade

Your pupils will be offered an eye-opening learning experience as they explore the history of the Lascelles family, the origins of Harewood House, and its connection to the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the British Empire.

Using objects from our collection and key archival source material pupils will engage in meaningful discussions about key issues, whilst being given the opportunity to ask questions to deepen their understanding. Pupils will also explore wider Britain’s connections to the Transatlantic Slave Trade through industry and commerce and how it is still present and relevant today.

Key Stage 1 & Key Stage 2 – Art: Surface Pattern Print Making

Experience the unique opportunity to explore Harewood with a professional artist, working together to sketch while surrounded by fine artworks and interior design.

Why not take a trip to our Bird Garden, where your pupils can meet our exotic birds.

Early Years Foundation Stage & Key Stage 1 – Meet the Penguins

Meet our famous Humboldt Penguins and take part in an interactive tour of the Harewood Bird Garden. This session has a focus on science, geography and art and design.

Key Stage 1 & Key Stage 2 – Meet the Birds

Meet our exotic birds in the amazing Harewood Bird Garden, choose from three special experiences, all with a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).

Key Stage 1 & Key Stage 2 – Minibeast Explorer

Discover the huge variety of mini-beasts that live in the gardens and grounds of Harewood House. This session has a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM)

Self-guided visits

There is so much for you and students of all ages to enjoy on a self-led visit to Harewood House. Admission includes full access to the whole site, including Harewood House, the Grounds and Gardens, Bird Garden, Farm Experience and the Adventure Playground so you can explore all day!
