Discover the history of manned flight with its birthplace here in Yorkshire and the role of Yorkshire Airfields during WWII as you explore the largest former RAF Bomber Command station open to the public. The historic site retains a unique atmosphere and original buildings house a variety of exhibitions. The extensive aircraft collection covers the birth of flight to the supersonic age, including WWII aircraft like the Hurricane and Spitfire made famous in the Battle of Britain. Education worksheets available.
Experience the tremendous atmosphere of the award-winning Yorkshire Air Museum & Allied Air Forces Memorial whilst admiring fascinating displays, such as the superb Bomber Command exhibition, restored Control Tower, Air Gunners Room, Archives & Uniform Displays, Airborne Forces Display, Squadron Memorial Rooms and much more. Our attractive Memorial Gardens offer a tranquil place to reflect on those who gave their lives in defence of the nation.
See Yorkshire's pioneering Cayley Glider along with the Wright Flyer, unique Halifax Bomber, fighters made famous in the Battle of Britain such as the Hawker Hurricane and Supermarine Spitfire, Mosquito Nightfighter and modern jets such as the Mirage III and Tornado GR4 taking us into the supersonic age!
We now have 7 live jet and propeller aircraft within the collection, from WWI fighters to the WWII Douglas Dakota and the mighty jets with the Yorkshire built Blackburn Buccaneer and Nimrod MR2 and Victor V-bomber, which all take part in our exciting “Thunder Days!” and other events.
The superb ‘Pioneers of Aviation’ exhibition features the work of famous figures from the aviation world who had Yorkshire connections, including Sir George Cayley, Robert Blackburn, Amy Johnson and Sir Barnes Wallis.
The excellent cafe provides hot and cold meals, snacks and refreshments in an atmospheric setting, reminiscent of a war-time ‘NAAFI’ - the perfect place to take a break during your visit.
The Museum is a VAQAS accredited quality Attraction from Visit Britain, the national tourism organisation and has been voted by the public as the Going Places Top Specialist Attraction for 2014/15. The Museum holds the Trip Adviser Certificate of Excellence.
Some of the children, quizzed by the head teacher upon returning to school, said it had been the, "the best trip ever!" Despite the cold the hangars and aircraft, and in particular the accessible cockpit sections, were obviously the stars of the show. Children I was supervising also enjoyed the control tower and the exhibitions (I took them to the air gunners' room, Pioneers of Flight and the Bomber Command exhibit).
We found that there was more than enough to see and do during the day - several of my colleagues commented particularly on that. In fact, some of the adults in the party confessed that, prior to coming, they had not been keenly interested (I know, I could hardly believe it either!). The day changed their minds completely and all said they'd enjoyed it, hadn't realised what was so close at hand, had not seen everything they wanted to and would probably come again (in warmer weather).
At least one pupil told me that he had arranged to come back for another visit with his parents during half-term.
I will be sure to let the classes who came, and the school in general, know about any upcoming events you are putting on.
Thanks again for your help in organising such a successful trip.
