The Outdoor Learning Service has a network of centres spread throughout the Midlands and North Wales. Between them these centres offer a surprising and varied range of outdoor learning opportunities, from Forest Schools and Adventurous Activities to Farm Visits and Environmental Studies. We can offer day visits and residential experiences.
Our highly-qualified staff work with schools to plan bespoke programmes that are linked to the curriculum, and we also work with a wide range of community groups. We have four residential centres: Ogwen Cottage (Snowdonia), Bockleton (Shropshire), Stansfeld (Oxford) and Bell Heath (Worcestershire). We also have a number centres that cater for day visits in and around Birmingham. We provide adventurous activities at BOEC, and environmental activities at four day centres:
Mount Pleasant School Farm provides ‘hands on’ farm visits for schools and community groups. It is a chance to find out where our food comes from and enables you to visit a real working dairy farm. You can feed our sheep, lambs, and chickens, and visit our cows, calves, and full-size pig. Visits are led by an experienced teacher in a safe working environment with an eco-friendly building.
Hams Hall Environmental Studies Centre is a beautiful, safe environment where children can enjoy activities that are fun, practical, exciting and designed to motivate. We have two well-equipped classrooms, a Tudor cottage, mixed deciduous woodlands, a large freshwater pond and a walled garden. Our experienced teacher can help you to discover plants and animals, challenge your map skills, investigate weather, explore Tudor times, and much more.
The Birmingham Botanical Gardens provides an exciting day out in a beautiful setting that can bring your topic to life. Schools can use our well-equipped Study Centre classroom and have full access to the grounds and glasshouses. Our experienced teacher leads a wide range of curriculum-linked activities. You can experience a tropical rain forest, discover plants and plant products, investigate climates and different environments, learn about life-cycles, and try orienteering.
The Birmingham Nature Centre enables you to discover endangered animals from Britain and around the world – red pandas, meerkats, snakes, ibis, lynx, giant tortoise, lemurs, invertebrates and many more. You can discover animals and plants in a variety of habitats - the rainforest, desert, pond and woodland. Schools and community groups are catered for all year round and can use our classroom, picnic areas, under 7’s playground and souvenir shop.
