The Judge’s Lodging

Step into the 1870s at the award-winning Judge’s Lodging and see how the world looked to the Victorian judges, their servants and felonious guests. Lit only by oil and gas lamps, this is an historic house with a difference – you can touch! Interactive days with the Victorian servants are a must!

Do you know the correct way to run a bath? How can you trap insects with a turnip? What was the first thing Queen Victoria did after her coronation? These and many other questions are answered on The Judge’s Lodging website. This Victorian museum, nesting on the Welsh border of Powys and Herefordshire, has long had a reputation for liking the quirkier side of history, so its virtual site is packed with handy hints the Victorian way, recipes for ice-cream and jelly, strange facts, along with information about the building and learning resources. Visit it and you will be guaranteed to find something to fascinate.

Visit the museum itself and you will be in for an even bigger treat, for this award-winning historic judge’s accommodation and court offers a most unusual journey back in time. Wander through the judge’s private apartments and make yourself at home, for The Judge’s Lodging an historic house with a difference – you can touch!  There is the full range of Judge’s and servants’ rooms; a whole gaslit world to discover. Vast courtroom and grim cells included!

Group visits can work with the Victorian servants, preparing the house for the arrival of the Judge in the interactive ‘Life Below Stairs’ days for KS1 & 2. KS3 and other educational groups can have costumed guides or take the character-based audio tour. Special topic sessions available throughout the year, including Victorian Christmas.

 In 2011 the Judge’s Lodging received the Highly Commended second place in a major new heritage award scheme, Hudson's Heritage Awards choice of the best heritage site in Britain for Education, Family and Community work, hot on the heels of their second Sandford Award for Heritage Education.
