Roman Vindolanda Fort & Museum

A Visit to Vindolanda offers an unforgettable Roman experience for your group. Students of all ages can retrace the footsteps of the Romans through the excavated remains of the fort and settlement, then when visiting the museum, your group can explore the exhibitions displaying life at Vindolanda nearly 2000 years ago.

The Site: Start your visit by having a talk by one of the Vindolanda Archaeologists. Then you can investigate the largest collection of buildings to be seen on Hadrian’s Wall including:

• Impressive military buildings
• Two Roman bath houses
• Commanding officers residence
• Extensive civilian remains
• Replica buildings and so much more

Live Excavations: The Archeologists are supported by a team of volunteers to excavate the site from April to September (Monday to Friday). Vindolanda is one of the few places in the UK where you can watch live archaeological excavations taking place. It's a riveting experience watching the Trust's team and volunteers from across the world uncovering the past's secrets and stories.

The Museum: Explore Chesterholm museum and find a collection of extraordinary finds including footwear, weapons, tools, pottery, rare painted glass jewellery and a wealth of other ancient objects. The collection is growing every year of excavation and there is always something new to see. You can look at the largest collection in the Roman Empire of :

• Leather – including boots and shoes
• Textiles – look out for the child’s sock
• Rare wooden objects from hair combs to bread shovels.

The Writing Tablets: Your pupils will be able to view some of the precious tablets which have returned to the museum. As a collection they form the earliest written records from Britain and include stores lists, duty rotas, requests for leave and regimental strength reports.

The Gardens: Wander through the charming museum gardens and visit the reconstructed Roman Temple, shop and house.
