Groups can explore our free galleries including: Experience TV where pupils can discover how television programmes are made and learn about the early pioneers of TV; Kodak - exploring the birth of photography and development of the camera; the Magic Factory – with hands-on exhibits to help pupils explore light and shadows; Animation and TV Heaven – with over 1000 programmes in the archive for teachers to select and view. Life Online – our brand new gallery exploring the invention of the internet and our relationship with the web opens in March 2012. School groups can book FREE gallery talks including the Mystery of the Cottingley Fairies, Experience TV Production Tour, Photography in Victorian Times and Animation in Motion. We also have downloadable resources to help you make the most of visiting the galleries.
We offer a wide range of practical workshops in a variety of media skills including: Animation, Television Advertising and Editing, Make a Movie Trailer, Documentary Making, Digital Storytelling and 48 Hour Film School. All our workshops are led by media industry professionals.
KS2 groups can pre-book to see CinemaMagic, the Museum’s new live demonstration of some of the special effects and visual trickery used in filmmaking for decades. Devised exclusively for the National Media Museum by multi-media performance company Forkbeard Fantasy, the show demystifies some technical illusions such as pixilation, the glass shot and the travelling matte – in surprising and hilarious ways!
For 16+ students, we offer a bespoke programme of Media, Film Studies and Creative and Media Diploma events and Study Days that enrich and complement AS/A2 course content. Please see our website for more details.
Groups can book to see an IMAX 3D film as part of a visit (charges apply). The daily IMAX films have a documentary style and follow science, history and geography themes. Teacher’s Choice screenings at 10.30am and 11.50am allow teachers to select the film of their choice and receive an extra discount per student.

National Media Museum Sleepover

Explore the Museum galleries after closing time and give your class a unique and exciting sleepover to remember. Children will learn new skills in our action packed evening, including animation, filming and editing techniques in our hands on workshops, before settling down and spending the night in one of our galleries. The following morning wake up to enjoy a cooked breakfast before finishing off your overnight adventure with a breathtaking IMAX film and receiving a complimentary DVD of your groups work. It's an unforgettable experience for all ages.
£25 per child (one essential adult per 5 children is charged at a reduced rate of £10)
Groups of 30 children and under with up to 6 accompanying adults are charged a flat rate of £800

Film Studies: Empowering Women (International Women's Day)

Kim Longinotto’s Pink Saris is the latest in this documentary filmmaker’s award-winning output focussing on life and work of the Gulabi gang in India, women whose cause is the protection of other women from social injustices. The film (by a western filmmaker) examines women's self-empowerment in a related, but different, culture to our own. The session will consider her work alongside that of other filmmakers (e.g. Deepa Mehta, Mira Nair). Led by Rona Murray.
