A visit to Chatsworth brings learning to life in the historic home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. Set in the heart of the Peak District in Derbyshire, our education program ensures that there is always something new to see and do in the house, garden, farmyard and adventure playground.
In the house our trained guides will help to unravel the secrets of 300 years of family life and the stories and objects that have shaped its history including new developments that represent the modern Devonshire family home.
Guided tours focus on entertaining, the Victorians, treasures and art collections. All tours are adapted to suit different key stages.
The gardens, parkland and woodland offers a varied landscape for a range of curriculum linked activities. Having evolved over 450 years, the 105 acre garden is full of contrasts, from rare water lilies to giant redwoods, ancient and modern sculptures and splendid waterfalls.
The famous waterworks include the 300 year old Cascade and the enormous gravity-fed Emperor fountain. As well as the huge maze, the rockery and the rose, cottage and kitchen gardens, there are also over five miles of walks with rare trees, shrubs, streams and ponds to discover.
Tours include, garden sculpture and sculpture safari, garden explorers, and water power. The kitchen garden grows fruit and vegetables for the house and is an excellent place to make links between the food we eat and its production.
Our purpose built farmyard is representative of farming on the wider estate and taught sessions include caring for animals, new life and growth, productivity and where food comes from.
Seasonal activities are also offered such as the popular Christmas nativities.
Tractor and trailer rides provide an in depth view of the wider estate and can be tailored to include farming, estate management, biodiversity and sustainability.
Stand wood has a fascinating mix of broadleaved and coniferous woodland with majestic trees, where pupils can explore natural colours and textures and use their senses to experience the natural world. They also learn about the importance of the wood as part of the larger Chatsworth estate.
Bespoke activities can be arranged through our education officer and we ensure all activities are inclusive of all needs and abilities.
