Life is an award-winning Science Centre full of exciting hands-on exhibitions, events and activities, including the largest planetarium in the North. Our Education department offers over 90 curriculum-linked workshops and provides access to equipment, facilities and expertise not normally found in schools for every age from reception to sixth form.
The core of the Centre for Life’s education programme is Lifelab, a purpose built suite of teaching laboratories where students at every level, can carry out exciting, hands-on, curriculum-linked workshops. Our workshops are directly linked to the STEM national curriculum which makes it easy for teachers to integrate the workshops with their own schemes of work.
In addition there is a permanent exhibition, ‘Human Life’ with three distinct parts: Our World looks at how man and other animals survive in extreme environments; Our Origins asks what it means to be human and explores the evidence for our evolution; Our Future explores climate change, stem cells and regenerative medicine and ageing and health.
We host travelling exhibitions each summer and winter and run an educational ice-rink from late November through to mid February. The exhibitions and ice rink are supported by live science shows in the Science Theatre, immersive digital shows in the region’s biggest Planetarium Theatre and a whirl on our Motion Simulator Ride. The exhibitions are also supported by workshops and trails.
For schools unable to reach Newcastle we can also offer Outreach workshops or bring along our portable Planetarium Dome.
Life offers a real scientific experience that will be fun and educational for the kids and enjoyable and stress-free for the teacher.
We all had a great day at the Life Centre yesterday, we thought the day was superbly planned and very well managed - the best trip we have been on yet!
Thank you to you and all your staff for making it a great day for the children.

What a fabulous day we had yesterday. All of the staff made our visit run like clockwork. They were helpful and friendly. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed it as did the staff! We will definitely recommend it to other classes and colleagues .

No more watching and reading, or swallowing loads of facts, just lots of opportunities for you to ask the kind of questions scientists do – ‘what happens if…?’ ‘If I put these things together what will it do?’ Curiosity is what you make of it – even of you make a bee-line for the same exhibit each time you visit, you can do something different every time.
