Built in 1598 Burton Agnes Hall is a magnificent example of Elizabethan architecture filled with treasures collected over four centuries. Lawns and topiary bushes surround the Hall and an award winning garden contains a maze, potager, giant games, jungle garden and four thousand plant species.
School groups are very welcome at Burton Agnes Hall and gardens and there is plenty for children to see and do.
The Hall is open daily from 1st April to 31st October and 14th November to 22nd December from 11am to 5pm. Arrangements can also be made to open at 10.00 am if required.
The Hall offers guided tours at no extra cost and can be tailored to suit different curriculums. Of particular interest to school visits is the Tudor period of the Hall. Our guides can conduct tailored tours on this period highlighting the dress, food and traditions of this time. These take approximately 1 hour for school groups.
Tours of the Kitchen Garden are also available with the Head Gardener at no extra cost upon request and last approx 20 minutes. The gardens offer a range of activities including the walled garden with fruit, vegetables and exotic plants, the woodland walk with creepy crawlies to spot, as well as the giant board games and maze!
There are several picnic areas throughout the grounds and school groups can also use the meeting room for lunch and lessons.
There is a website available for teachers to use in preparation for visiting Burton Agnes Hall with ideas for projects and activities with school children. http://inmychair.eriding.net/
